Route 666
On one of my occasional wanderings through the Wikipedia, I found an interesting article about the former Route 666 that connects extends from Monticello, Utah, to Gallup, New Mexico. (It is now Highway 491.)
This may just confirm to all of you that I am, in fact, the geekiest of geeks, but I found the article interesting. If you have ever wondered how highway numbers are chosen, you'll probably learn more than you really wanted to know if you read the article.
Here's another interesting bit on Route 66.

Progress on the house

View from front corner. The black area around the entry will be covered with stone. The rest will be stuccoed. The abundance of windows in the corner bedroom is to make it easier for Olivia to sneak out at night.

Courtyard fireplace - Like the entry, the black part will be covered with stone

Front door (off courtyard) into living room. Archway leads into great room.

Looking from family room into dining area. (Kitchen is behind the wall on the left.)
Deep in the Heart of Texas
I just returned from a trip to San Antonio for a pathology conference.

This is the plaque on the door of the Alamo Shrine. I don't know why I expected the Alamo to be more of a tourist trap. They did have a "museum" with lots of tchotchkes, but I found the story (which I never completely understood before) and the rest of the place pretty moving.
